Years 2 and 3

In Years 2 and 3, we follow a creative topic-based curriculum to inspire learning. We follow the National Curriculum for English and Mathematics. We place a big focus on reading and encourage children to read for 10 minutes at home each night. We have a daily phonics lesson where children learn new sounds and practice their blending and segmenting skills. We use the Little Wandle system for teaching phonics. The books the children read, closely match their phonics knowledge.

We use ‘Learning with Parents’ to set English, Maths and reading home tasks, which are closely linked to the learning taking place during the week. Spellings are also set each week. We practice weekly tackling tables in class.

We promote the school rules of ‘Ready, Respectful, Safe’ in our classroom, so that school can be enjoyed by all. Children are encouraged to take pride in their work and always give things a go; developing growth mindset and building resilience.

Children are celebrated within our class following the PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) child of the week and using our recognition board. We have strong links with the local Church, with Father Paul regularly visiting for our collective
